The East Tennessee seismic zone in the southern Appalachians is an ~75-km-wide, 350-km-long region of seismicity that extends from NE Alabama and NW Georgia to NE of Knoxville, Tennessee. Tennessee is the 36th largest and the 16th most populous of the 50 allied States. Knoxville and surrounding areas do not sit on a traditional plate boundary, what we often think of as causing tremors. To help clarify the late Pleistocene earthquake history and the earthquake potential of the East Tennessee seismic zone, we conducted an 18-mo pilot study to seek evidence of paleoseismic activity and have made important discoveries. The Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ), a zone of small earthquakes stretching from northeastern Alabama to southwestern Virginia, may have generated earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater within the last 25,000 years, according to a study published June 27 in … The East Tennessee seismic zone in the southern Appalachians is an ~75-km-wide, 350-km-long region of seismicity that extends from NE Alabama and NW Georgia to NE of Knoxville, Tennessee. Notes on seismic hazard sensitivity studies for Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone 3 March 2008—R. Earthquake epicenters are located 5-26 kilometers deep in autochthonous basement, and faults producing these earthquakes do not break the surface. The Eastern Tennessee seismic zone is laced with known faults, but numerous smaller or deeply buried faults remain undetected. The ETSZ is one of the most active earthquake zones in the eastern United States.
